PeakDeck Patios, a fictional outdoor-living contractor, sells projects that start as a vague “what would this even cost?” Phone-tag estimates were losing serious buyers, so the site needed a self-serve calculator that turns curiosity into a qualified, itemized starting point.
Three decisions that shaped the build
Four small steps, not one long form
Size, surface, extras, estimate. Each step asks one question a homeowner can answer without measuring twice, and focus moves to each new step so the flow works end to end on a keyboard alone.
The math is a tested module, not UI glue
Every rate and rule lives in one pure pricing module with unit tests asserting three hand-computed scenarios. The interface can be redesigned freely without anyone re-deriving the arithmetic.
An honest range, not fake precision
The estimate is itemized line by line, then bracketed with a low and high figure, because a real contractor's number moves with site conditions. Software that pretends otherwise erodes trust at the first site visit.
Scope, honestly

Image credits and licensing
The header photograph is used under the Unsplash License, which permits commercial use and does not require attribution. We credit the photographer anyway: Clay Banks, a wide wooden deck with a dining table, chairs and a grill, green woods behind it and a teal cabin wall to the right.
No identifiable face appears in it, and that is deliberate. A free-stock license covers the photographer’s copyright in the picture, not a subject’s likeness rights, so a recognisable face on a published page needs a released image.
On a real order, every image ships with its source and license recorded in the delivery notes, alongside the running app.
